Would you rather control 3 heroes each with at least 3 unique abilities, or 5 units with max 2 basic abilities.

If you would have to control 5 units, do you think it's a good idea that you instanly lose when a commander (one of the chosen units) dies? It's the same for opponent.

Would you like your units to sometimes dodge attacks or attack critically ?

Would you like to customize your units with weapons and armor? You have to earn those items and sometimes it can provide an advantage on the field.
